Common causes of skin allergies in children

If your kid is scratching the skin very often or if there is a rash on the skin that fails to go away on its own, then it could indicate a skin allergy. One of the most common allergies in children, skin allergies can be caused due to various factors that range from changes in weather to exposure to environmental toxins. Let us understand some of the common causes of skin allergies in children.

  1. Eczema (Atopic dermatitis)

It is one of the most prevalent skin allergies in children, affecting approximately 10% of children globally. If your child has asthma, food allergies, or hay fever, he or she is at a higher risk of developing eczema. Additionally, if any of these disorders run in your family, your child is at risk for developing eczema.

If your child has eczema, her skin is extremely dry and lacking moisture, making it more prone to irritation and inflammation when exposed to the elements. Furthermore, some children with eczema have food sensitivity, which makes the condition worse when they are exposed to food triggers.

The symptoms of eczema include:

  • Dry skin which is itchy and irritated
  • Red rash
  • Recurrent skin infections

The symptoms might worsen when exposed to dry air, sweat, soaps, rough fabrics or foods such as soy, eggs, and nuts.

  1. Angioedema

It is a type of skin allergy that causes skin swelling and is frequently accompanied by hives. It mainly affects the eyelids, mouth, or genitals, but it can also affect the respiratory tract or stomach mucosa in some situations. Laryngitis swelling can result in life-threatening consequences.

Acute angioedema is a type of angioedema that lasts for a few minutes to hours and is caused by an allergic reaction to certain drugs or foods, such as nuts, soy milk, eggs, and so on. Chronic angioedema, also known as recurrent angioedema, is more severe and has no identified cause.

  1. Hives (urticaria)

Hives are skin allergies that manifest themselves as red lumps on the skin when exposed to an allergen. Hives, also known as urticaria, normally go away on their own if the allergen is avoided. Hives, unlike other skin allergies, can arise anywhere on the body and persist anywhere from a few minutes to several hours or days.

Hives are an inflammatory reaction brought on by the immune system’s production of histamine. This substance causes blood vessels to leak, resulting in skin edema. It can cause various symptoms such as trouble breathing and swelling of the cheeks and mouth, in addition to red and itchy rashes on the skin.

  1. Contact dermatitis

Touch dermatitis, often known as allergic rash, is a skin ailment that arises when an allergen comes into contact with the skin. If your child is allergic to copper, for example, coming into direct touch with a vase or jewelry containing copper (even in minute amounts) could cause an allergic reaction. Contact dermatitis is the medical term for this condition.

Contact dermatitis causes the following symptoms:

  • Skin rashes that are red and lumpy.
  • Itchy and scaly skin
  • Extreme itching
  • Skin swelling at the point of contact

Nickel (metal), poison ivy, toothpaste or mouthwash chemicals, cosmetics, colors, and even some drugs are all prominent triggers of allergic contact dermatitis.
